California Family Code

The California Family Code is the set of rules that govern cases filed in the superior court system (called the Family Court), mainly pertaining to:
- Divorce
- Legal Separation
- Annulments or Nullity Actions
- Child Custody and Visitation
- Domestic Violence
- Child and Spousal Support
This set of rules outlines what the court must consider for different family law cases. There are other code sections that apply to family law cases also, such as the Evidence Code, Code of Civil Procedure, Business and Professions Code, and Probate Code to name a few. The California Family Code, however, is the most important.
The Family Code is comprised over several Divisions, and includes preliminary sections and definitions, provisions relating to jurisdiction (the family court’s power to hear certain matters), procedural rules, statutes relating to which marriages are valid and which are not, rights and obligations of married people, child custody and child support statutes, and so forth.
